1. Fastnachts are a type of donut that were invented by the same folk that created this event, the Pennsylvania Dutch. They are denser than regular donuts, and often made with potato dough. They are traditionally square or triangle shaped and quite delicious.
2. This event is the Appalachian equivalent of Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, that takes place in New Orleans.
3. The event, created by the Dutch and Germanic people, is a first-rate example of Catholicism mixed with old time Pagan beliefs.
